Can you believe it's the second day of Summer already, Memorial Day is already behind us and Independence Day is fast approaching . If we are not careful, Labor Day will be here and we will wonder once again what happened to all our plans? We still have time to take advantage of swimming, picnics, camping, or maybe just getting outside to take advantage of your dose of Vitamin D. If you can't play yourself, there is something cathartic about going and watching your younger family and loved ones frolic or compete.
"When someone gets the disease we all are infected to some degree " This is something I've repeated many times coming from my observations of those whose families have been affected. When we are working with those that are in our charge, "especially those with Dementia" it is important to remember that we are the Healthy ones and how important it is for us to stay vigilant and look after our own needs as well as the patient. It's really easy to back away from the rest of the world and let your position as a caregiver be your excuse to check out. If you have lost interest in things that use to be a passion and find it easy to relax in the confides of your noble position of provider . "Wake Up" The rest of the world needs that vibrant person we once knew. Besides, you don't want to morph into a patient yourself.
It has been about a month since I have been getting some relief from a caregiver. Diane seems to be doing really well with a different person part of the time. Sometimes Karen can get Diane to do things that I can't seemed to convince her to do. Different face, different approach. She does ask about me when I'm out and is really happy to see me when I get home. It's been nice to go to the Gym and have some lunches with friends that I can have some adult conversation with.
I still love Diane as much as I ever have, and enjoy her company . You learn to accept what they have to offer and appreciate some of the special glimpses of who you once knew. But, this is not the women I once knew and no matter how hard I try it's hard to remember who she was at Fifty . This is what I hate so much about this process. They are slowly pulled away from you, and you really have to concentrate and squint to get a quick glimpse of who she wants was.
